The Japanese have been culturing Yellowtail kingfish for over 40 years and one young WA aquaculture manager will soon take a small team to Japan to learn from aquaculture researchers and farmers who annually grow over 100,000 tonnes of kingfish.
Justine Arnold, Technical Manager at Yellowtail kingfish producer Indian Ocean Fresh Australia, which operates in the recently declared Mid West Aquaculture Development Zone, was awarded a Premier’s Agriculture and Aquaculture Entrepreneurship Program grant to lead an expert team to Japan.
Ms Arnold, whose aquaculture career began as an 18-year-old student at TAFE, followed by a Marine Science degree with honours, said she is looking forward to deepening her knowledge of the aquaculture industry in Japan.
“Yellowtail kingfish culture in WA spans less than 10 years and it will be of enormous value to examine management strategies and systems developed in Japan for warm water kingfish culture, and to gain insights into skills and techniques required for our rapidly emerging industry in WA,” Ms Arnold said.
